Surprisingly, Ben's homeschooling is going remarkably well. Thank you to cousin Rachel for recommending
Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. I am enjoying the schooling much more than I thought I would. There is an undeniable sense of satisfaction in teaching one's child to read. The kids were actually watching a Sesame Street snippet on Youtube about sounding out words in the above photo. Thank God for the two-headed monster: Rrrrr ... unnn. Rrr...unn. R...un. Run!!!

Elena, that's how we all taught reading back in the 60's and 70's and it worked. Then the school brds. in their infinite wisdom took phonics out and replaced it with the whole language program totally and hence a lot of children, and I mean a lot, graduated from primary school without learning how to read properly. And God forbid we hold a child back - it wasn't allowed. No accountability. Nothing does it like good old phonics. I don't know why the board hierarchy doesn't prescribe to that old rule of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Another thing is it would have saved the tax payer a whole pile of money! Oh,how novel!
So keep up the phonics Elena and judging by the way your kids are avid readers, you're doing it right! Congratulations!
Mary, phonics is totally back in the schools now and works so beautifully. I love teaching it because I learn so much about Ben and about learning itself.
In other news, Rebecca had her daughter this morning via planned c-section: 6lb10oz, Miriam Inez (Spanish for Agnes). I talked to her this morning and she sounded well despite being doped up on morphine.
