Murderous Threats and Persecution

We are on our fifth reading of the Conversion of St. Paul as Jacob has set a twice-day practice schedule for his upcoming ecclesial debut. Despite my familiarity with the story, I still haven't grown used to my six year old reading, "Meanwhile, Saul still breathing threats and murder..."; but, I imagine, by next Thursday we will all have successfully committed to memory the conversion on the road to Damascus.
Our last attempt at reading was slightly more formal as I placed Jacob at the lectern (woodstove) and asked him to pretend that we were the congregation. Of course, I should have known that silliness would ensue. Hannah behaved quite civilly but Ben began to breathe threats and murder and was eventually threatened with bodily excommunication. Alas, threats of a papal bull against second son proved futile and the murderous breathing began to border on matricide: "I will boil you in (with a quick survey of the kitchen, his eyes alighted on the waste disposal unit)... garbage." This produced the desired laughter from his siblings and the threat was repeated ad nauseum. The result: Joseph was placed under the banishment of naptime; Jacob and Hannah were sentenced to an afternoon of books and quiet play; and Ben has been ordered to recant. We shall see if I need to call in a higher authority: read - our father who art at work, come and discipline thy wayward progeny.
By the way: Happy, happy Feast Day of St. Joseph the Worker. I went for a run this morning at 6:45 and ran into a good number of upstanding Catholic men fleeing our little town. One by one, carloads of Canadian papists (there was at least one real Polish cleric in his exceptionally long cassock) passed me with a wave as they headed out of town. Memory soon came to my rescue as I recalled the men's pilgrimage to St. Joseph's Oratory. Whew, I almost ran home to check if Dave was still there.

I heard this reading yesterday in church and am stunned that Jacob will be reading it. I mean, he just turned 6! it is long and has a ton of big words in it. go, Jacob, go.

I heard the reading and chuckled to myself because I thought of the 'threats' being uttered in your home :) Prayers and blessings to J for his reading!
