First Holy Communion

Jacob (left), Hannah (right) - only hours old - one pound weight difference, 2 cm height difference
Eight years later, same sides - 15 pound weight difference, 4-5 inch height difference
Plus, we've added a few. (Isaac was taking a morning nap.)
Individual portraits. My mother made Hannah's First Communion gown. (Mom also made the twins' baptismal gowns in which five Afelskies and one Smith have been baptised over the past eight years.)
Hannah wore blue flowers in her hair and a blue sash in honour of Our Lady, Mother Mary. The sash was also made from the skirt of the bridesmaid dress that my younger sister wore for our wedding. Something borrowed, something blue.
Isn't she beautiful? My older sister suggested the hairstyle as I am severely hairstyling challenged. I put her hair in two braids and clipped it up in the back with dried blue flowers throughout. The hairstyle remained until evening when sleep necessitated the removal of the clips.
Jacob was warned to keep his outfit in perfect condition as there are three younger brothers who will have to wear it over the next few years. Apparently such an admonishment does not apply to climbing trees after receptions. When I asked him why he had climbed a pine tree (yes, pine!), he replied that he was playing hide and seek and it seemed like a really good place to hide. "Nobody else thought of hiding in a pine tree, Mom."
The procession. Jacob was first in line and I was unable to snap a photo before he was gone.
Hannah was randomly picked to carry the crown for Our Lady for the May crowning. Given the blue accents on her dress and in her hair, the selection was quite appropriate.
Beautiful dress, eh?
Fr. Brian Christie atop a ladder - only in the Catholic church.
Jacob preparing for his First Holy Communion with one last read.
A view of the hair.
The much-awaited moment. I debated putting this photo up as it is a moment of great intimacy but I find it so precious.
Piety drooping on Hannah's right.
I couldn't resist this one - my only art shot.

I pray that this picture is a harbinger of the rest of their lives. Keep them close, dear Lady. Bring them to your Son.

Such precious photos Elena and thanks for sharing. Both Hannah and Jacob look so grown up now ... And so angelic! They both look wonderful, he in his suit and she in that gorgeous dress.
Congratulations to you all ... For each of you have played an important part in the raising of these lovely children!
Lots of love and many blessings!

great photos. Just a flash, I saw my mom in one photo of Hannah when she is looking wistful. Now I can't see it, but that is how those things go.
Like the new photo of you too.
The art photo is worthy of Ann Voskamp!

Yes, I agree with you Julie ... When I was looking at that photo there was something ... Couldn't put my finger on it ... Very much like Mum ... And she was a beautiful woman.

your kids are so beautiful! I hope it was a good day for all of you. Stephen was keeping me busy, so I missed a lot, but we definitely wanted to be there on their special day.

Mom and Mary,I think I can see flashes of Gran as well - funny.
Colin, I notice that the whole Kerr family was there and I was thankful for your presence. Also, my mom told me that Ben turned to her during mass when Stephen was crying, rolled his eyes and said, "Stephen, he's two!" Isaac kept us busy as well - Dave missed most of the end.

Beautiful pictures, Elena, of such an important and intimate moment in their lives. Looking at them reminded me of many grace-filled moments in my life, thank you. And a lovely new picture of you. May you all continue to walk with Our Lord and Our Lady.

Oh. My.
So beautiful - the twins, Hannah's dress and hair, and the whole occasion. I hope to prepare my children as well when their times come.

This is so beautiful, Elena. I got choked up seeing the picture of your children as newborns then gazing at Our Lady on their First Communion day. Time does fly, and that seems so poignant as I type while resting my 5-day old on my lap.

Thank you for this post. It made me so happy, and really look forward to watching my children receive more sacraments (and for little Isaiah to receive his first!)

Getting caught up here...beautiful photos Elena! Looks like you had a really joyful day. I haven't been to a May crowning since I was in grade school (a looong time ago), and I was thinking how precious it was to have that at your children's First Communion. Hannah's dress is truly beautiful and Jacob looks so dapper. God bless you all!
